Basel, Switzerland, often called the art capital of the world, is one of my favourites. I have long dreamt of spending at least a month there, wandering through its galleries and getting lost in its narrow gullies. Basel has an energy that seeps quietly into you. In the best possible way. 
There is a Christmas tradition in Basel that stayed with me. During the season, large Christmas trees appear in public squares, outside shops and even in front of homes. These are known as wishing trees. Instead of ornaments, they carry handwritten wishes. People leave notes hoping they will come true. I saw wishes for shoes, bags and love. I also saw many that simply said “world peace”. The notes come in different languages, sizes and handwriting styles, each one a small glimpse into someone’s hope.
On some trees, especially those outside homes, people leave extra Christmas decorations for anyone who may not be able to afford them. No questions asked.
To me, Basel’s Christmas trees capture the spirit of the season in the most honest way. Giving. Hope. Quiet generosity. In Basel, even an ordinary street corner gives you a reason to fall in love with the city all over again.
Some trees, especially outside homes, hold more than wishes. People leave Christmas decorations for those who can’t afford them. No grand gestures, just quiet kindness.
