Togalu Gombeyata—Karnataka’s very own leather puppetry—is where mythology meets shadow play.

Made from goat hide or deer skin, these puppets aren’t just colourful—they’re translucent, bringing the characters to life under the glow of a lamp. The process? Salt, soda, sun, and a splash of vegetable dyes—mostly green, blue, red, and black. Once dry, the leather is cut, stitched, and strung together into four-foot-tall storytellers.

And what do they narrate? The Ramayana and Mahabharata, of course. Because when it comes to drama, war, and divine intervention, nothing beats an epic—especially when told through dancing shadows.
