As you drive past Zabeel Park in Dubai, a large frame rises into view, catching the sunlight. It is the tallest picture frame in the world.

Opened in January 2018, the Dubai Frame was designed to create the illusion of time travel. It deliberately frames two versions of the city. To the north lies old Dubai. To the south, the newer city stretches outward, vertical and gleaming.

The gold-clad structure rises to about 500 feet. Two towers, each fifty storeys high, are joined at the top by a glass bridge. From here, the city opens up in all directions. Below, at ground level, are a museum and gallery that trace Dubai’s past, present and imagined future.

The frame was designed by architect Fernando Donis and constructed using glass, steel, aluminium and concrete. It stands not as a building you enter casually, but as a structure meant to be looked through. A pause in the city. A deliberate act of framing.
