The City Palace in Udaipur stands on the banks of Lake Pichola. It was built over nearly four hundred years, beginning in 1559 under Maharana Udai Singh. The palace is not the result of a single vision. It is layered. Accumulated. Time made visible.

When it comes to patronage of the arts, Indian royalty was unapologetic. The City Palace bears this out. Art is everywhere. On ceilings. On floors. Along walls. And in places you do not expect.

Even a water-storage corner is not spared. Here, a wall mural unfolds quietly. More than a hundred years old. Painted in rich colour. Krishna and his gopikas move across the surface, watching over the space. In front of the mural stand enormous copper pots, taller than my five-foot-two frame. They catch the light. They hold water. They share space with art.

In the City Palace, beauty is not reserved for ceremony. It exists alongside function. Almost casually. As though art was never meant to be separate from daily life.
