At Napier Museum in Trivandrum, the real mistake? Not looking up.

One of India’s oldest museums, it was originally established in 1857, but the grand structure you see today was built in 1880 by Ayilyam Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore. The British got involved too—Lord Napier, then Governor of Madras Presidency, sent the English architect Robert Chisholm to design it.

The result? A Kerala-style masterpiece, but not just Kerala. Centuries of trade brought Chinese, Japanese, Arab, and European influences, all subtly woven into the architecture. And the ceiling? That’s where the magic happens. Hand-painted teakwood panels, gold inlays that catch the light, and frescoes bursting with red, green, yellow, and earthy hues. Look closer, and you’ll spot dragons holding up the beams, because why stop at ordinary?

The best part? The colours shift with the light, thanks to natural vegetable dyes that have stood the test of time—well, most of them, at least.
