India’s first mosque? That would be Cheraman Juma Masjid, built way back in 628 CE—when Prophet Muhammad was still alive.
The story? Cheraman Perumal, the king of Kodungallur, Kerala, converted to Islam, abdicated his throne, and set off on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He never made it back—died en route—but his Arab friend, Malik Bin Dinar, returned to Kerala with the king’s letter, asking for a mosque to be built.
And so, Cheraman Juma Masjid was born.
It’s got that classic Kerala architecture, and while it’s been renovated over the centuries, the inner hall remains untouched. Oh, and the oil lamp? Been burning since the day it opened—because some things just don’t go out.
