Cheraman Juma Masjid, in Kodungallur, is often described as India’s first mosque. It was built in 628 CE, during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad.

It's said that Cheraman Perumal, the ruler of Kodungallur, embraced Islam, abdicated his throne, and set out on a journey to Mecca. He did not return. He is believed to have died along the way. His Arab companion, Malik Bin Dinar, came back to Kerala carrying the king’s letter, requesting that a mosque be built. That request was honoured.

The mosque reflects the architectural language of Kerala. Sloping roofs. Wooden elements. An inward, unassuming presence. Over the centuries, it has been renovated, but the inner prayer hall remains as it was.

Inside, an oil lamp continues to burn. It has been kept alight since the mosque was established. It is a small, steady flame. Quiet. Enduring.
