In Cubbon Park, it’s simply known as “the red library”—but officially, it’s the State Central Library. Built in 1908 in memory of Sir Seshadri Iyer, the 111-year-old landmark stands out in striking red, framed by lush greenery.
Declared a public library in 1915, it started small—4,750 books and 215 members. Today? It’s home to over three lakh books, 300+ periodicals, and a Braille section with 800+ books and audiobooks.
But don’t get too excited—this is a reference-only library. No borrowing, just reading. Every book published in Karnataka? You’ll find a copy here.
Daily footfall? 400-500 book lovers. Opening hours? 8:30 AM - 7:30 PM. Just don’t show up on Mondays, second Tuesdays, or government holidays—the books will be there, but the doors won’t be open.
